When you buy CBD, the appearance and smell of the flowers are often the first things you notice. However, certain defects—which aren’t visible at first glance—can affect their quality. Mold or rot are among the most important issues to look out for, and I’ll explain how to spot them.
Mold can develop during the cultivation, drying, curing, or storage of CBD flowers.
An unusual odor, suspicious stains, or a powdery appearance should immediately catch your attention.
A contaminated flower should never be eaten, even if the signs appear to be limited to a small area.
Molds are microorganisms that occur naturally in the environment. Their spores are constantly circulating in the air and can settle on plants at various stages of their life cycle.
Under normal conditions, these spores remain dormant. However, when humidity becomes excessive and ventilation is insufficient, they can grow rapidly and colonize the flowers.
Hemp has certain characteristics that contribute to this phenomenon. For example, the buds are often compact and rich in resin. This dense structure can sometimes restrict airflow inside the CBD flowers. When moisture becomes trapped at the center of the bud, conditions become ideal for the growth of certain fungi.
The flowering period is the most critical stage. As the flowers grow larger, their density gradually increases. Humid weather, repeated rainfall, or an inadequately ventilated greenhouse can promote the growth of mold.
Botrytis, sometimes called gray mold,, is one of the most feared diseases in hemp cultivation. It often begins inside the flowers before becoming visible on the outside. Unfortunately, the early signs of infection often go unnoticed.
After harvesting, the flowers still contain a significant amount of water. The drying process is intended togradually remove this moisture without degrading the cannabinoids or terpenes.
If the room is too humid or poorly ventilated, mold can grow in just a few days.
However, drying too quickly can also compromise the quality of the final product. Producers therefore seek a precise balance to ensure high-quality drying without the risk of infection.
Even a perfectly healthy flower after drying may develop mold later on.
Aging involves storing the flowers in suitable containers to improve their stability and aromatic quality. If theresidual moisture remains too high, any spores still present may resume their growth.
Prolonged storage in a hot or humid environment also increases the risks.
The appearance of white, gray, or sometimes slightly greenish fuzz is the most obvious sign of contamination.
Unlike trichomes, which look like tiny, shiny crystals, mold generally has a stringy or cottony appearance.
Some types of contamination cause localized color changes. You may notice brownish, gray, black, or yellowish areas that contrast with the rest of the flower. These discolorations often appear before the mycelium becomes visible.
A high-quality flower generally retains some elasticity. When an infected area is affected by rot, the plant tissues gradually break down.
The bud then becomes crumbly, unusually dry, or easily crumbles between your fingers.
CBD flowers naturally have herbal, fruity, spicy, woody, or floral aromas, depending on their terpene profile. CBD therefore has a pleasant smell. Fungal contamination often alters this aromatic signature.
Some contaminated flowers give off a smell of a damp cellar. Others develop notes reminiscent of wet cardboard, damp fabric, or stagnant soil.
In some advanced cases, the smell becomes downright unpleasant and reminiscent of rotting plant matter.
These changes are generally easy to spot if you are familiar with the product's normal aroma.
Mold gradually breaks down certain compounds found in flowers. This breakdown alters the flower’s original aromatic balance. A flower that was once rich in citrus, fruity, or resinous notes may become much blander after contamination.
This confusion is very common among first-time consumers.
Trichomes are resinous glands that occur naturally on CBD flowers. They contain cannabinoids and terpenes, among other compounds. To the naked eye, they appear as a shiny or frosty layer.
Molds, on the other hand, have several differences. Here's how to tell them apart:
The trichomes glisten in the light, while mold appears dull.
Trichomes look like tiny crystals, whilemold forms filaments.
Trichomes are evenly distributed across the flower, whereas mold often appears in localized patches.
A magnifying glass or a portable microscope can usually clear up any doubts quickly.
Consuming a moldy flower is strongly discouraged.
Inhaling fungal spores can cause respiratory irritation in some people. People with asthma, allergies, or a weakened immune system are particularly at risk.
Even when only one part of the flower appears to be affected, it is difficult to know how far the contamination has spread.
Microscopic filaments can extend far beyond the visible areas.
That is why it is not recommended to simply remove the suspicious part and keep the rest of the bud.
