What is Kush? Meaning and origin of this CBD variety

Kush isn't just a style or a label you stick on flowers to make them look pretty. No, it's an origin, a history and an identity. So open your eyes (and your mind), Mama takes you on a journey from the mountains of Afghanistan, to the breeders of California, to the shelves of CBD shops.

Things to remember

  • Kush comes from the Hindu Kush region between Afghanistan and Pakistan, a land sacred to cannabis.
  • This is an Indica variety with compact flowers, powerful aromas and soothing effects.
  • In its CBD version, Kush retains its richness without any psychotropic effects.

The history of Kush

The word Kush refers to a very specific place: the Hindu Kush, a mountain range between Afghanistan and Pakistan. It's a harsh, high-altitude area with extreme conditions, where cannabis has been growing for thousands of years. It's even where some of the oldest varieties of hemp have taken root.

In this region, plants have learned to survive cold, altitude and dry winds. So these are stocky, solid, highly resinous varieties with deeply soothing effects; they are Indica varieties.

For centuries, these plants have been used locally, especially to make hashish. It's a tradition, almost an art. To make hashish the flowers are rubbed by hand to extract the resin, resulting in a dense, powerful product, full of spicy aromas.

From Afghanistan to California: conquering the world

So how did this mountain herb end up in your little bag of French CBD?

In the 1970s, Kush seeds were brought from Asia to the United States, particularly California. It was here that everything exploded, thanks to cannabis growers who crossed these varieties from the Hindu Kush with other genetics from Mexico, Colombia and Thailand.

This mixture gave rise to legendary hybrids, some of which are still the stars of today. You've probably heard of the OG Kush ? It's one of the most famous offspring of these crosses. A compact, mouth-filling plant with an ultra-relaxing effect, it has become a worldwide cannabis icon.

Since then, the name "Kush" has become a label of quality, almost a myth. It evokes a powerful, deep, enveloping plant. And this prestige naturally found its way into the CBD world a few years later.

CBD version of Kush: an exceptional product

So today, you can find many varieties of "Kush" in CBD version. But this isn't just marketing! Breeders have worked hard to retain the typical Kush profile while reducing (or eliminating) THC to suit legal levels.

In the Mama Kana boutique, you will find flowers such as Bubba Kush CBD or Cookie Kush but also OG Kush CBD or Hindu Kush CBD, with their typical aromas and the added bonus of relaxation, but without the soaring effect.

Kush-type CBD flowers are generally dense and resinous, even sticky to the touch and richly aromatic, with notes of earth, wood, pepper, lemon or even fuel. These are CBD flowers flowers perfect for relaxation, especially at the end of the day or to calm anxiety.

Why are Kush CBD varieties so popular?

Mama has to be honest with you: not everyone likes Kush. It's a character variety, but if you like deep, Indica-dominant stuff, they might be for you. What's more, some Kush strains are among the cheap CBD flowers like our Bubba Kush from €1.75 / gram.

Here's why some people are really into Kush:

  • For its powerful, complex aromas: Kush has a very rich terpene profile, sometimes earthy, spicy, woody or lemony. A real pleasure to smell and taste.
  • Provides marked physical relaxation: even without THC, Kush CBD has a relaxing, enveloping, calming effect. It's an ideal flower for the evening, or for unplugging mentally without losing control.
  • Stable, reliable genetics: Kush plants are robust, often used in indoor or greenhouse cultivation. They produce compact, rich flowers that are easy to work with for serious growers.

Kush isn't just a name on a label, it's anoble origin for a plant that comes from far away, forged by mountains and centuries of cultivation. And if today you can enjoy a CBD version, it's because passionate people wanted to pass on this tradition, without the psychotropic effects.
