Hemp is not made up of a single cannabinoid - CBD - but of various active molecules - CBN. Composed differently and not having quite the same action as CBD, we're taking advantage of this article to take stock. I'll explain what CBN oil is and the differences between CBN and CBD.

What is CBN (Cannabinol)?

CBN, otherwise known as Cannabinol, is very different from cannabidiol (CBD). In fact, CBN is much closer to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) than to CBD. Let me explain.

CBN is not a molecule naturally found in hemp. It is obtained through human manipulation, notably by heating and oxidizing THC. To be more precise, CBN is originally present in cannabis in the form of an acid called CBNa. Being derived from THC, CBN is often - wrongly - associated with THC, but cannabinol is not a psychoactive substance, so it's not a narcotic. Not being considered a narcotic, CBN is legal in the United-Kingdom and possesses a number of physical and psychological properties.

What are the potential effects of CBN?

We don't yet have a great deal of experience with CBN, and studies on this molecule are still ongoing. So you need to be aware that the scientific community is still studying the substance and cannot yet guarantee its effects. However, CBN is already being credited with both health and well-being benefits. Among the avenues explored by scientists as to the virtues of CBN, we note :

  • Helps reduce anxiety states;
  • Increased appetite stimulation;
  • An aid to falling asleep;
  • Stimulation for quality sleep;
  • Virtues for dermatological problems;
  • Virtues for respiratory problems (such as asthma);
  • A significant reduction in glaucoma.

It's very important to note once again that CBN is not a narcotic and is not addictive. So, in addition to being legal in the United-Kingdom, it's a serious avenue for, among other things, helping to relieve patients undergoing heavy medical treatment. CBN is much talked about for its appetite-stimulating properties without side effects - unlike THC. Patients undergoing chemotherapy could therefore be a prime target for this substance, as well as underweight people.

CBN VS CBD oil

What are the differences between CBN and CBD oils?

Finally, the more we look into the subject, the more we realize that CBN and CBD have little to do with each other. The same applies to the differences between CBN and CBD oils.

Two separate molecules mean two different chemical compositions. CBD is naturally present in hemp leaves and flowers, and can be extracted in a variety of ways (cold-pressed, with solvents or supercritical CO2). CBN, on the other hand, is obtained by oxygenating hemp flowers.

Next, remember that both molecules stimulate the human endocannabinoid system through the CB1 and CB2 receptors, giving rise to beneficial effects on the body and mind. Although they act on the same endocannabinoid receptors, CBN is said to be rather stimulating, whereasCBD oil oil is seen as calming.

Which oil is right for you?

Before choosing your oil according to your needs, remember that cannabinoids work through the entourage effect. As a reminder, this is a natural mechanism that takes place between all the molecules derived from cannabis, so that they act in symbiosis, reinforcing each other's effects.

With that clarified, remember that, as mentioned above, CBD promotes a calming action, while CBN is more of a stimulant. Now, each of these molecules is reputed to relieve muscle aches and tensions, as well as chronic pain. In fact, the ideal situation would be to use a combination of the two, so that their effects reinforce each other.

For appetite stimulation, on the other hand, CBN is the most highly recommended product. In fact, it's one of the major alternatives for treating this need, whereas CBD seems to have the opposite effect. As a reminder, a study carried out on rats showed that CBN increased the duration and frequency of feeding.

As far as sleep is concerned, it turns out that CBN is not the most advisable cannabinoid, especially if not combined with other derivative molecules. If, on the other hand, sleep difficulties are due to stress, CBD is a better solution , as it acts on GABA receptors and helps slow down the stress response. You can read more about CBD and sleep here.

Ultimately, the best solution is to opt for a full-spectrum oil that acts on all the desired symptoms. You can also supplement your oil with CBD or CBN isolate, depending on the desired action.
