You've probably noticed that CBD is everywhere. Oils, candies, vapes... but be careful, just because it's legal doesn't mean it's suitable for little ones or that you can leave it within their reach. And that's why Mama makes it clear: CBD should always be kept out of reach of children.

Things to remember

  • CBD is not for children, and their bodies would react differently from those of adults.
  • CBD products are often sweet and can be mistaken for candy or sweets.
  • You need to store your CBD like medicine, away from little eyes and little hands.

CBD is not for children

First of all, it's important to understand that CBD, even though it comes from hemp and doesn't cause a high like THC, is not a neutral product. It's not just a harmless little plant; it's an active substance that acts on your body.

Among adults, consumers report that CBD may help them relax. It is also used to promote sleep or soothe certain types of pain. These are potential effects that are not yet 100% confirmed by science, and even less so in children! Their bodies are growing, their brains are developing, and the effects of CBD on them are neither well studied nor validated by researchers.

So giving a child CBD is like giving them a drug with unknown side effects. It could be dangerous, and there's no justification for it. That's why all serious CBD brands make it clear that their products are for adults only.

What are the risks if a child accidentally consumes CBD?

The real problem is that kids are curious. And CBD products, especially gummies and other candies, can look like classic treats. Imagine a box of colorful teddy bears... To a child, it looks like a pack of Haribo candy. And if you're not careful, they can swallow them without you even noticing.

But what exactly would be the dangers of CBD if a child inadvertently consumed some?

  • Digestive problems: nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain. Not a good thing for a fragile tummy.
  • Excessive drowsiness: CBD can cause fatigue, even in adults, and in children this can be even more pronounced.
  • Unusual agitation or nervousness: every body reacts differently, and some children may become more agitated.
  • Drug interactions: if your child is already taking medication (e.g. for asthma or another condition), CBD could interfere with its effectiveness.

So no, CBD won't put your child in immediate mortal danger in the majority of cases, but it's still an active substance that can cause real discomfort and, in some cases, require a visit to the emergency room.

How to make CBD safe at home?

Now that you understand why CBD should be kept away from children, let's move on to solutions. Keep in mind that you should treat your CBD like a medicine or household product. It must therefore be stored with care.

Here are a few simple tips to avoid accidents:

  • Store it in a closed cupboard: ideally high up and locked, so that even the most intrepid can't reach it.
  • Avoid deceptive packaging: some CBD candies and gummies look too much like children's treats. Prefer less attractive formats, such as oils with pipettes.
  • Never leave anything lying around: no box of gummies on the living room table, no vial of oil on the worktop. Anything accessible to a child is a direct temptation.
  • Explain to your children according to their age: even without going into details, you can teach them that certain products in the house are not candy and that they must not touch them.

These simple gestures can save you a lot of stress and, above all, protect your little ones.

CBD is not a product for children, even if you use it to relax. Little ones may confuse it with candy, and accidental ingestion can cause real discomfort. So I advise you to do as you do with medicines and store your CBD safely.
